Rancho Carlota – Building a Community

by Margie Olivares

Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio has been building at Rancho Carlota since 2020. We broke ground in August 2020 and have continued to expand the community. As of March 18th, we’ve built 64 homes in the subdivision. With a goal of building around 250 homes, we still have a long way to go.

Rancho Carlota Community Bond

Rancho Carlota is a strong neighborhood. Habitat families have built a tight-knit community. Homeowners have described it as a safe and united group. Within the first year, families already hosted a block party and look forward to hosting more to come.

“Everyone looks out for one another. It is good to know that you live in a safe community where you know your neighbors are looking out for your home and others.” – Habitat homeowner

Schools By Rancho Carlota

Rancho Carlota is located in the Southwest Independent School District. Its proximity to Resnik Middle School and Southwest Legacy High School are both within a mile of the neighborhood. There is also the added benefit of having two higher education institutions nearby. Both Texas A&M – San Antonio and Palo Alto College are about five miles away.

Employers in the Area

Rancho Carlota is also far from large employers in the area. Both North Park Toyota and the Toyota Motor Manufacturing plant are nearby. Schlumberger, a technology company, Maruchan (yes, like the ramen!) and the Smurfit Kappa packaging company are close by as well. With more employers moving to the area, employment opportunities are sprouting all around the neighborhood.

Nearby Nature & Activities

San Antonio and Bexar County boast great parks and rivers in the city and county. This provides great opportunities for fun outdoor activities. Rancho Carlota is located near the Medina River Natural Area Park (4 minutes away). Further up the river is the Donkey Lady Bridge. The Bridge is part of the El Camino Real de los Tejas Natural Historic Trail! Families can go on a hike, fish or simply enjoy nature.

Rancho Carlota is also just 20 minutes away from Poteet, Texas. Poteet is home to the historic Poteet Strawberry Festival that is 75 years old! The festival features a carnival, entertainment and of course a variety of strawberry vendors. Poteet also has a flea market year-round that people can go shopping at.
