The Role of Volunteers
At Habitat, volunteers are the heart of our organization! More than 15,500+ volunteers assist in our home-building program every year. They build homes, raise funds, work in the offices, feed hungry volunteers, work at our Home Centers, and more. Our volunteers work alongside our homeowners and help them on their journey toward homeownership. Volunteer opportunities at Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio include:
Build Homes
Home construction is the heart of Habitat. No previous experience is necessary to volunteer. Each home will have an experienced leader to instruct volunteers and all the tools and safety equipment necessary. We have opportunities on the work site most Tuesdays – Saturdays. We provide lunch for our volunteers on Fridays and Saturdays only.
Lunch Crews
Help feed hungry volunteers. If you want to provide lunch to our volunteers you will provide the (commercially purchased) food, beverages, and paper products for approximately 30 volunteers on any scheduled build day. Providing lunch for one house (30 volunteers) is worth 24 hours of community service (provided that is accepted by your organization or school).
Volunteer Services Assistant
This is an ideal position for volunteers who want to be on the worksite but for some reason choose not to participate in construction. This volunteer will help Volunteer Services staff host all the volunteers on-site (ex: sign in, help with lunch, etc.).
Home Centers
Volunteers can assist in our Home Centers with pricing, stocking, loading/unloading trailers, assembling cabinets, and more. Opportunities are available Monday-Friday (8 am – 6 pm) and Saturday (9 am – 5 pm). Must be 18 years or older.
Deconstruction Crew
The Wrecking Crew tears out usable building supplies from local remodeling projects. Salvaged materials are sold in our Home Centers. Volunteer days and times will vary depending on the need.
Office
Volunteers in the office assist with clerical stuff, data entry, filing, helping prepare for an event, etc.
Come to a Volunteer Orientation
Come learn about our mission and volunteer opportunities. Orientations are a great first step for first-time volunteers – they are recommended, but not required.
Habitat hosts bi-monthly volunteer orientations virtually and in person. If you would like to register, please contact our volunteer coordinator at Volunteer@HabitatSA.org.
Orientations held at 12 Noon are hosted via Zoom, and the 5pm Orientations are in-person at 311 Probandt, San Antonio, TX 78204.

NOTE: Court Appointed Community Service
All court-mandated community service hours MUST be completed at one of the Habitat Home Centers. Construction site hours DO NOT count toward court-ordered hours. Call the store nearest you to sign up.
