An Energizing Experience | More than Homes, Building Relationships | Making a Commitment to Faith | Lighting the World Through Goodworks
An Energizing Experience Our church has been involved with Habitat for several years, and we're currently building our second house. We feel that investing in a Habitat house enables us to do something tangible to help people. We've involved over 150 people in the current build, and the experience has once again energized our church. Judd Edwards Pastor Woodland Baptist Church San Antonio, Texas Return to top
More than Homes, Building Relationships The Ecumenical Genesis Habitat Project has provided our members with the opportunity to connect directly with Jesus’ prayer in John 17. It is one thing to say we believe in the unity for which Jesus prayed among all believers as we worship in separate places on Sunday morning; it is quite another to experience that unity in action first-hand as we work side-by-side on Friday and Saturday at the Habitat job site. In the process of building homes for families, our members have built Christian relationships with homeowners and co-workers from other churches that will not only endure throughout eternity but will be a witness to a watching world that we are one in our Lord Jesus Christ. Making a Commitment in Faith We became involved in Habitat 10 years ago because this ministry truly gives families a hand up, not a hand out. Our congregation saw that through Habitat we could make a difference in people’s lives here in our own town. Is it a big commitment? Yes. What I have found in my experience in partnering with Habitat is that God places a passion for this ministry on people’s hearts and lifts them up from within the congregation to lead the effort. For every house we have committed to build, we have raised the funds. Sometimes we get a little nervous, but our congregation always responds to the need and the opportunity. As leaders we can offer our congregations that opportunity. Rev. Stephen Sanders Associate Pastor Coker United Methodist Church San Antonio, Texas Return to top
Lighting the World through Good Works Northern Hills UMC accepted the full responsibility to fund and build a house. We knew we didn't have to be pros, just motivated by faith and willing to be good servants of Jesus Christ. I'm really proud that we as a church can embrace a ministry like this, and that we were in a place in our congregational life and spiritual maturity to tackle something like Habitat. It isn't just about the good feeling that it gives us. It is about how we can be the light of the world in northeast San Antonio, let men see our good works and give glory to our Father in heaven. That is a very good thing. Rev. Milton Lewis Senior Pastor Northern Hills United Methodist Church San Antonio, Texas Return to top
