School Staff Join Volunteer Construction Crews

WHAT:         Approximately 16 staff members of Southwest Independent School District’s newest elementary school, Medio Creek Elementary, will join Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio Saturday to work on the homes of families who will be served by the school, which opens Monday.  The school is adjacent to HFHSA’s newest community. Construction on the first eight homes in the community, Coleman Ridge, began two weeks ago. 24 homes will be completed by year’s end.

WHEN:         Saturday, August 20, 2011

WHERE:       Coleman Ridge

Directions:   Old Pearsall Road and Loop 410;  from downtown San Antonio, take 35 South (toward Laredo) to 410 North; take Exit #2 (Old Pearsall Road); turn Left and go under bridge; take the first right onto Excellence Drive; follow the parking signs

WHO:           Volunteers from Medio Creek Elementary School, who will work side-by-side to build a home with a San Antonio family in need; in total, more than 150 volunteers are expected to man the construction crews on Saturday.

WHY:           Working in partnership with families in need, Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio works to eliminate substandard housing in San Antonio in hopes that everyone will have a simple, decent and affordable place to live. The homes are sold to the homebuyers who qualify for the program on an interest-free, 20–25 year mortgage.

HFHSA partners with the families, volunteers and sponsors to make homeownership possible for families who could not otherwise afford it.  These partnerships result in affordable homes with mortgage payments ranging from $375-425 per month.  HFHSA is celebrating its 35th year.   To date, the organization has built 713 homes, including the first Habitat home ever built in the United States.
