The Many Faces of Habitat
Below, read a Q&A from a HFHSA volunteer.
Habitat Volunteer Malissa Underwood

Malissa Underwood of San Antonio is a stay-at-home mom who volunteers weekly with HFHSA.
Q: What does Habitat mean to you?
A: Habitat is a way for me to get out of the house and help people besides my family.
Q: What do you feel Habitat means to our community?
A: Habitat is great for the community. It allows families the opportunity to get out of an apartment environment and live in their own home affordably.
Q: What is your involvement with Habitat and how has it changed you?
A: I am a weekly volunteer and do whatever is needed that week. It has made me realize how many people out there want to help and make a difference.
Q: What is your most memorable Habitat moment?
A: I’m not sure I can narrow it down. I have enjoyed most of the hardworking people I have worked with and most of the jobs I have accomplished.
Q: What would you tell others who may not be familiar with Habitat about the program?
A: Don’t be afraid to come out and volunteer even if you don’t have a background in construction. You will learn and meet some amazing individuals.
Q: How important do you feel Habitat is and why?
A: Habitat is very important for the families who want to better their living situation. I think it’s great that they have to attend homeownership classes, so they can understand the challenges that they face.
Q: As a volunteer, how have you benefited from your service?
A: As a stay-at-home mom, it gives me an opportunity to get away from home and interact with other adults. I have also learned some great home improvement skills.
Q: How often to you volunteer?
A: I have volunteered most Fridays for over a year.
Q: How did you make the decision to volunteer for HFHSA?
A: I have wanted to volunteer with Habitat since college but have not had the opportunity until now due to work and small children. I finally had the time once we moved to San Antonio.
Q: Do you think volunteer service is important for everyone and why?
A: I think volunteering is very rewarding. The knowledge that you are working hard to help out and not just for money is invaluable.
